There are various foot and ankle sports injuries that patients sustain by leading an active lifestyle, including rupturing an Achilles tendon. A ruptured tendon is when the tendon becomes torn—either completely or partially—in response to excessive stretching of the muscle. Being able to recognize symptoms of a ruptured Achilles tendon is instrumental for ensuring proper treatment, which may include surgery.
Most people will experience one or several of the following symptoms, although it is possible to rupture the Achilles tendon without feeling any of them. Common symptoms include:
- A popping or snapping sound when the injury occurs
- An inability to stand on your toes on the injured leg
- An inability to bend your foot downward or "push off" the injured leg when you walk
- Pain, possibly severe, and swelling near your heel
There are other Achilles tendon injuries that can develop—including Achilles tendinitis and tendinosis—it is important to seek treatment no matter what type of injury you sustain.
