How Does Regenerative Medicine Work?

Dr. Eugene Pascarella, with a desire to help people, began Foot & Ankle Associates of Florida in July 1984.

One of our commitments at Foot & Ankle Associates of Florida is to use advanced treatments to help our patients heal from their foot and ankle injuries in the quickest possible amount of time. To achieve this particular goal, we use regenerative medicine options – including VIAFLOWTM and SurgigraftTM.

We’ll explore these specific options momentarily, but let’s take a second to make sure you understand what we mean by the term “regenerative medicine.” Basically, this is a branch of medicine focused on researching and utilizing benefits from biological material that contribute to regenerating human cells in order to restore or establish normal function.

how does regenerative medicine workIf that seems like a lot to process, it will clear up a bit once we look at the specific regenerative medicines we offer our patients.

Now, people will sometimes ask why we use regenerative medicine. The simple answer is because it is proven to work. Sure, the science is still fairly young, but we have seen very encouraging results and the products we offer are FDA-approved (so they have been extensively tested and determined to be safe).

So how does regenerative medicine work?

VIAFLOWTM is created from placental connective tissue matrix that would normally be discarded at hospitals. Instead, the birthing mothers volunteered to donate the tissue after healthy, planned C-section births.

The reason this particular kind of regenerative pain treatment works is because the placental tissue retains certain biologic components that are normally found in the body and have a positive influence on the immune system.

Amniotic therapy has been used in the field of medicine for some time now, but had previously been administered as grafts (which are applied to the surface). With VIAFLOWTM, the placental tissue is changed into an injectable product, which then enables us to deliver the beneficial biologic components directly to the site of the injury via an injection.

This particular product helps improve natural healing processes by delivering naturally-occurring growth factors and anti-inflammatory proteins to the injury site.

In a similar manner, SurgigraftTM is also based on regenerative tissue matrix. This product enhances the healing process following surgery by providing critical ECM (extracellular matrix) proteins to the surgical site. This serves to improve the body’s response to the injury site through cellular signaling. SurgigraftTM is also able to reduce inflammation at the site and reduce scar tissue formation.

This particular product uses a validated process that is designed to preserve the structural integrity of the amniotic membrane allograft in order to ensure the product meets the high quality criteria established by FDA regulations.

Of course, VIAFLOWTM is also regulated and approved by the FDA – which means you can trust both of these products to be safe (or else we wouldn’t offer them to you!).
