Why does my foot arch hurt?

There are several possible reasons that factor into an explanation of what causes arch pain. Some of the possible causes include:

  • Foot arch painPlantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia runs underneath the foot and helps to support the arch. When the fascia sustains excessive force or stretching, it becomes inflamed and arch pain can develop.
  • Weakened arch-related ligaments, tendons, or bones. This is particularly true when the tissues forming or supporting the arch are subjected to overuse.
  • Abnormal foot structure. Specifically, arch pain can arise when foot arches are either too high (cavus foot) or too low (flatfoot). Orthotic devices are often beneficial. Our treatment plan for you may include recommending these devices.
