How Swimming Makes You a Better Runner

It’s tough running in Florida in the summertime! Most runners around here get especially hot and sweaty, and can’t wait to go jump in a pool to cool off – well, guess what? That’s a great idea! Not only is going for a swim a good way to get your body temperature down, but believe it or not, swimming makes you a better runner!

It’s true! When you cross train with low-impact sports like swimming, you can actually improve your running performance, and there are a number of reasons why.

How swimming can make you a better runner

Because swimming doesn’t involve the repetitive impact that running does, it basically gives your body a break—reducing your chances of sustaining an overuse injury—without sacrificing fitness. In fact, you can actually gain aerobic fitness, since you can swim twice as long as you can run without increasing your risk of an injury, and let’s face it—staying injury-free is key to continuing your training and reaching your goals.

The benefits of cross-training don’t stop there, either!  When you incorporate swimming into your running routine, you use additional and different muscles in your body than you would just running alone, which means you build greater strength, power, endurance, and better overall fitness, and that translates into better performance!

Of course, while including swimming in your fitness plan helps to reduce your risk of a running injury, you can’t always prevent a problem from occurring. Good news, though—if you do happen to get injured, those who cross-train tend to recover quicker than those who don’t.

So, go ahead and jump in that pool. Replace a couple of your training runs with laps. When you do, you’ll recovery faster, run faster, and reach your goals faster!
